LOS ANGELES, CA – March 16, 2009: Pacific Pavingstone Inc., (http://www.pacificpavingstone.com) one of the largest paving stone driveway, patio, pool deck and walkway installation companies in Southern California is looking at the future of paving stones!
In a previous blog entree we talked about how pavers were going to be used to purify air. Now, paving stones are being looked at to purify our water! The goal is to have driveways, patios, pool-decks, walkways and other paved areas collect rainwater, purify it and then send it to underground tanks to be reused. The pavers would be made with special additives that would purify the polluted run-off water. After going through the first level of purification, the water would be collected in underground tanks and used for things such as irrigation and cleaning.
Currently, 60% of impervious urban surfaces are roads, driveways, and walkways. These impenetrable surfaces are causing significant amounts of flooding, contributing greatly to the pollution of our waterways. The new pavers would prevent this flooding and even help purify the water. The pavers would not only contain an additive to help trap things like lead, zinc and cadmium (coming from car tires, brake linings and exhaust), but they would also channel the water to underground tanks that contain gravel which would also trap pollutants.
The pavers would also help trees to grow as the recycled water would give them more access to water and air. A special concrete device has been developed to help direct the direction of tree roots away from the pavers, preventing the issue of the pavers becoming unlevel. The future of paving stones is becoming greener by the day. Not only will roads be more aesthetically pleasing, they will also be even more environmentally friendly and helpful!
Terry Morrill, founder and CEO of Pacific Pavingstone, sums up with: “This is a very exciting step and very green step for the future of paving stones. The reliability of pavers is extending beyond just the customer and into the environment.” Terry Morrill also owns California Waterscapes (http://www.californiawaterscapes.com), which designs and installs ponds, streams and waterfalls around the Los Angeles area. Pacific Paving Stone has twice been included on the Inc 500 list of fastest growing companies, and this year was included on the Inc 5000 list and recently won The Angie’s List Award for Superior Service.
